| Excerpts |
|
“If we have diabetes, heart trouble or epilepsy, people sympathize and understand those illnesses can be controlled by medication. But if we have a mental illness, even one controlled by medication, sympathy is often replaced by fear – and stigma.” ** “For ten years, until I was twelve, I was a sexual toy and punching bag. I was controlled, a commodity, not a person, a child dependent on two sadistic deviants.” ** “My peers say I am smart and creative. My I.Q. isn’t the problem. Erasing horror is my problem. My challenge is putting the past to rest and making a fresh start. I suffer setbacks. Recovery is uneven, uncertain, and I must keep trying. To understand me you must imagine things you may not want to imagine – all the bad and ugly that follow me like a black cloud.” ** “Those of us challenged by mental illness want what you want – to be loved, needed and respected – and recognized for the things we can do. With time, therapy and medication, many of us will live independently – and fully.” ** |
