“Fearless Price Baum"

"Fearless Price Baum" is the story of the life of Price Armstrong Baum, a skilled athlete and sailor. A quadriplegic from a diving accident at age 22, he became a staunch disability advocate, testifying before Congress on the Americans with Disabilities Act, writing articles, conducting seminars and establishing the Human Relations Department at the National Rehabilitation Hospital before an automobile accident hospitalized him again for many months.

He resumed his advocacy for persons with disabilities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and for many years served as Executive Director of the Eastern Shore Center for Independent Living.

He was known as FPB: Fearless Price Baum.  He died in 2006, age 48.  Known for his sunny disposition and engaging smile, he helped other disabled persons build ramps, acquire lift vans and secure low-cost housing.

Excerpts

“Shy was not a word one associated with this ebullient force of nature.  He would strike up a conversation with strangers on the street and any elbow-bender at a watering hole.  He commonly questioned what others accepted on faith, not to be contrary, but because he was genuinely curious.” -Henry, Price’s brother
                                               **

“Price was whooping and hollering as he dove - once – twice - into shallow water – pulling himself up on the bank each time.  He should have stopped with two.  The third one broke his neck.” -Deputy Sheriff
                                                **

“Sometimes he would lash out at his fate, making life unpleasant for himself and everyone around him.  But as months passed he slowly, painfully accepted his new life and encouraged us to talk to other patients who rarely had visitors.”  -Henry, Price’s brother
                                              **

“Man, Price could make me laugh.  Any place, any time, rain or shine.  We were close as brothers can be from the time we bunked together in Greece.  He was Mr. Sunshine, a bundle of energy and good cheer.  I was big brother Willy.”  -Willy, Price’s brother
                                              **

“The first time Price visited our brother Henry in Bermuda in his wheelchair he had to use a freight elevator to reach Henry’s office at the bank.  Henry was mortified.  It wasn’t long before that bank was fully accessible.”  -Willy, Price’s brother
                                            **

“My heart belonged to Price, always.  And still does.  Women flocked to him at parties, surrounding his wheelchair.  That’s how I knew where to find him.   Inside a fawning group of females would be a beaming FPB – bravely fighting off their advances.  I couldn’t blame them, really. He was the most beautiful and charming man I ever knew.”
  -Maggie, Price’s Sweetheart                                                                                      **

“My life changed in a split second that fun evening at Royal Oak. I was scared, more frightened than I’d ever been; in a panic, numb, shouting at my legs to move – and they refused. Why me, God?  Why me? “  -Price Baum
                                         **

“Not long ago able-bodied kids rarely saw disabled kids.  They were in schools for the deaf, blind or crippled – which was the operative word in those days – and sometimes hidden at home.  Stigma made people ashamed of being disabled.  It was cruel and terribly unfair.  Today kids with disabilities attend regular classes.  That’s good for their able-bodied classmates, too.”  -Price Baum
